Hi, Liz here from the Redo Your Furniture, (aka Frame and Frills) workroom. Oh my word! I love redoing furniture! With every project I do, there’s opportunity to learn so much. I’m very glad I’ve learned what I have before tackling this large table redo.
How to use Fusion Mineral Paint SFO, (Stain and Finishing Oil) isn’t too difficult, in fact it’s quite user-friendly… there are a few tricks in preparing the wood to receive a stain though and hopefully this video I made shows you both how to prep your wood surface along with a few tips applying SFO.
Fusion SFO is an oil-based stain and finishing oil. It’s super durable, even for floors!
The traditional application, (which I’ll show you in the video) is to use it on raw wood, allowing the product to penetrate into the wood.
There is no need for a top-coat with SFO, it is an all-in-one application. If you want more sheen, you just apply more layers of SFO, switching over to the natural color, (no added pigments in the natural color) when you have achieved the color you want but still want more sheen. I’ll explain more details about that in the video.
Depending on humidity and other factors, it usually takes SFO 9-24 hours to dry before you can apply additional coats. If you apply it too soon, it’ll reactivate the layer that’s already on it.
Another application I’ve used SFO on, is as a glaze over paint.
When using SFO as a glaze over paint, because it can’t penetrate into the surface, the dry time is much longer. I’ve had some projects where it took over a week to dry! Here’s a post showing a cabinet I used SFO on as a glaze over the painted and decoupaged finish.
My shop, Frame and Frills stocks all the Fusion Mineral Paint products, including 2 sizes of SFO in all 6 colors. If you have a huge project, and need the super-duper large size of SFO, (like if you’re doing your floors etc.) please reach out, I’d be glad to order it in for you!
