Kid’s Easter Tablescape

March 23, 2016

SimpleDecoratingTips.com Kid's Easter Tablescape

From the dining room chandelier adornment to the kid’s Easter tablescape and even the built-in buffet with the dessert feature…

Like most families, with adult children, the holidays can be a time of stress due to the pulling here and there, as everyone tries to spend time with both parents and  in laws, (and then throw in a step-parent or two into the mix and wowza… ) it can get to be such a juggling mess with multiple families,  that we decided to start a new tradition and we love it! We have an Easter celebration and dinner with only our grandchildren… no parents, just grandma and grandpa and the grandkids.

It’s so much fun and a total ‘win win’ for everyone! We can plan it on a completely different day than Easter, so that their parents don’t have to worry of trying to get time in with us too on Easter… hopefully relieving some stress for them, and giving them a little more freedom and breathing room to just enjoy their own little ones. Plus, it’s a really special time for us with our grandchildren too.

This year our grandchildren range in age from 11 to 1, so the activities were focused to be sure it was safe for the 1 year old, but also so that the older children wouldn’t get bored. Although, honestly they love to be with their cousins so much that boredom wasn’t an issue! This year, we had a walk to the park, a watercolor painting time, (I set up the watercolor station in the breakfast room ahead of time) of course the Easter basket hunt, we devoted time for a Bible devotion.

Here are a few things I did this year for the kid’s Easter tablescape…

Keeping a fresh colorway with pastels as an accent, my goal with the tablescape was to balance fun child-like decor with a somewhat formal setting. I think sometimes we fail to realize that even small children appreciate the formality of sitting at a properly set table and the special-ness that a setting like that can add to the whole meal.

The centerpiece started with the balance scale I had planted grass in, I added some Styrofoam glittered covered eggs to the grass. (see more about this Fixer Upper style balance scale, in this post, with info on where to get it, here) Here’s the link for a scale used for the centerpiece.

3 bunches of tulips, a family favorite flower, placed in cleaned up peanut butter jars was a perfect, yet simple addition.

Then for around the balance scale, I spread out a couple bags of paper Easter grass, mixing 2 colors and adding cheddar bunny filled plastic eggs, a perfect little snack for them to munch on before dinner was served. I also found those cute foil wrapped chocolate ‘bugs’ that were tucked in here and there in the colored grass.

The chandelier in the dining room of our 100 year old house, received a little Easter embellishment for the kids to enjoy too. I added a couple of colorful fold-out pleated circles to hang in the center of the chandelier, and then around the outside ring of the light, tied on long skinny ribbons, are clear plastic balls with which I filled each one with a cute Easter ornament. (even though I’ve had my ornaments for several years, I found these oh-so-cute! ornaments here.)

I just covered the seam of each plastic ball ornament by gluing on a narrow piece of decorative ribbon, and finished the ornament by adding the small bow at the top.

If you noticed in the background of the picture… on the built-in buffet, there is a special treat…

I made a chocolate layer cake and covered it with edible grass, sugar flowers and a chocolate bunny to top it off. I don’t typically bake a lot of desserts, but saw this on Pinterest, and thought the kids would love it. They did… but actually they were most enthralled with the chocolate bunny… (and couldn’t wait til they could eat it!) the easiest part… ha ha Oh well, it looked good sitting on the buffet. 😉

Easter is such a joyous time of the year as we celebrate what Jesus did for us, and the fact that he overcame sin and death… it only makes sense that we celebrate with lovely fresh pastel colors. I love that I have the opportunity to have such a special time to celebrate this amazingly gracious gift of love from God with my grandchildren.

If you’re a grandparent, I’d love to hear what traditions you’re starting with your grandchildren!

Shopping Fun!!
