I love a good fence. (even a so-so fence can appeal to me) New England has so wonderful examples of great fences that I just have to share some with you. Instead of filling this post up with my words, I’d thought I’d mix it up a bit, so along with the pictures I took showing you the beauty of fences, (mostly from the Kennebunks) I’m including quotes about ‘fences’ from some well known folks…
Simple white picket fence with horizontal rails and square posts.
Old stone and wood picket fence.
Famous ‘Wedding Cake House’ with very fancy gate.
Here are 3 pictures of the same granite and iron fence:
Granite base curves around the corner to match the curve of the sidewalk.
Lovely iron gate detail.
Aged and weathered detail of granite posts.
Old stone fence with iron gate.
White wood fence with post detail.
Rock fence with a flat top, rolls along with the slope of the land.
Wood fence with sturdy horizontal boards.
Stone and wood mix fence.
I’ve seen some stone masons making new rock fences and walls around Kennebunkport, talk about true craftsmen. Amazing work.
Here’s one that’s hard to see, but…
isn’t it so beautiful? It’s a mixture of a stone pillar, with a low stone fence and a hedge and gorgeous plantings.
Rock wall with pillars at driveway.
Inspiring, aren’t they? The beauty of fences are they serve a purpose, they keep things in and out, they define the space in the garden or yard, but also they can offer such a lovely visual treat.
