Someone Else’s House: Bungalow Master Bedroom

February 8, 2013

The other day I introduced you to a very sweet, young couple that has bought their first home in a vintage neighborhood full of charming bungalows. Here is the bungalow master bedroom!

So let’s take a look at the whole bedroom today, with before, during and after pics…

Well to start with, when they bought this house just a couple months ago, the bedroom looked like this: (minus the previous owner’s furniture)

It doesn’t look too bad, that is if you like lots of green stripes… they were a bit overwhelming, so off came the paper… be prepared it gets worse:

Steaming the paper off took a solid 12 hours. (It always looks worse before it looks better, and at this point in the project, the room looked like a wreck!)

But this young couple didn’t give up, so next they patched the walls, (lots of cracks and divots in the old plaster) the patching and sanding took a lot of hard work and time… then they caulked all the woodwork, primed and painted the trim, ceiling and walls…

And this is what they have now:

Same exact corner, but in this soft gray color, the walls are a tranquil background to layers of natural toned furnishings.

The neutrals just blend together, creating a cocoon of soft warmth in this bedroom.  She casually blended just the right amount of painted furnishings with wood finished ones. All the trim in the upper level is painted white, so the warm wood tones compliment beautifully, as well as the original maple floors with real age distressing.

I showed you the pair of unmatched dressers and how she cleverly painted and papered them into a coordinated set. (click here to see the dresser re-do)

Opposite the bed is one of the pair of dressers she re-did. Again the mix of neutral colors is wonderfully blended with lots of textural details.

This pretty light was original to the room, and they were super careful when moving furniture into this room to avoid hitting it. I love the elegant yet simple detail of it.

On her dresser sits a reminder of one of her great loves… horses. With the somewhat mirrored finish on this sculpture you can almost feel the movement and energy of the horse. Then sophisticatedly contrasting the contemporary finish of the horse sits a vintage dresser mirror. I love the juxtaposition of these pieces together.

And since we’re getting close to Valentine’s Day I’ll leave you with a sweet heart plaque which is adorning a little spot in this beautifully renovated vintage bedroom:

The use of the solid wood bed frame as a focal point really pulls the whole room together. The dark wood notes in the refinished dresser along with the side tables don’t make it feel quite like a set, but do mesh well together. Not to mention that the wood furniture in the room contrasts well with the wood floor.
